Welcome to new artist, Jim BrewsterThis month, we welcome a new artist to the Gallery, Jim Brewster. Who are you and what do you do? I grew up in an IBM community back when they were the world’s best employer. I drew sports cars and racecars regularly as a child. Our house had regular art projects, each kid experimenting with some new idea. My Mom held annual neighborhood art shows giving awards to kids in each age year. Fast forward to 2025, and I’ve just retired from a career as a Software Engineer. What is your medium and why did you choose it? Five years ago, a family friend named Jean Olderman showed me her process for her watercolor style collages. I was intrigued. I started experimenting with source materials and mounting materials and found second hand coffee table books and second hand picture frames. I now have too many bright and beautiful books with limitless potential for future collages. Why art? Why do you do what you do? Creating objects of beauty seems like one of our best options as a human. To create something unique seems like a natural expression. Like singing or playing music. What is integral to your work, to the work of an artist? Imagination. Vision. Picturing a new idea and then calculating how to make it happen.
