We welcome a new artist to the Gallery, Jeff Schoolcraft.Who are you and what do you do? I'm Jeff Schoolcraft, by day a Senior Software Engineering Manager for a product in the Global Supply Chain domain and by night a wood turner. What is your background? I'm a Marine Corps veteran and classically trained computer scientist. I've been creating on a computer for over 40 years. In the last decade or so I've been looking for a physical creative outlet and started with flat wood working, including building scenery for my daughter's dance company. More recently I've switched from flat to round with wood turning. What is your medium and why did you choose it? My medium is wood and resin. I'm a bit of a pen and notebook nerd and have always had strong opinions on pens. I found a YouTube video of someone turning a pen and knew I had to try to do that myself and here we are. Why art? Why do you do what you do? I turn for a number of reasons. I love that, unlike writing software, I can hand someone a pen that I made and people just "get it". No screens, no long explanations about how to use it or why it exists. It's just a pen or bowl or candle holder. You can feel the weight, feel the curves, it's very satisfying.
